Located in the historic Roeding park in Fresno's southwest central section, Storyland has provided generations of Fresnans (yes, Fresnan, ha) with tons of memories. Built by the Rotary club in the early 50s as a local answer to Disneyland, Storyland is a series of scenes out of the Grimm's Brother's fairy tales, complete with that dark, Medieval, Germanic vibe. I really don't remember that creepy Dark Forest tone to the park when I was a kid, but it is certainly an aspect. Talking to some friends who have also recently visited the park after decades, they too express surprise at the dark quality of the attractions. This is without a doubt, a jewel shining in the middle of Fresno, and really, a jewel for California. Most of the statues date back to the 1950s. If you have never experienced Rotary Storyland you really need to. Right across from the Fresno Zoo and Playland.

A photo of me riding the merry go round at Rotary Storyland as a toddler. This must have been around 1971. Probably the first time I felt g-force, ha, I dont look too happy. The statues on the merry go round were the evil forest witch chasing Hansel and Gretel. www.patrickgeorgephoto.com |
